In winter, an elderly lady living alone in a courtyard in Beijing welcomes a young girl who has come from another city for studies. The girl wishes to rent a house close to the school, but finds the elderly lady’s asking price too high. With a determined expression, the elderly lady refuses to lower the rent. Despite her reluctance, the girl eventually agrees to the terms, leading to a tumultuous relationship filled with arguments and disagreements between the two.

Whether it’s installing a telephone, paying the phone bill, or using an electric stove and refrigerator, the girl feels that the elderly lady is calculating every move, causing her considerable distress. On the other hand, the elderly lady finds fault with the girl in every aspect. However, as time goes by, the two become each other’s support. As the days pass through spring and summer, the elderly lady witnesses the joys and sorrows of the girl’s life, especially during her romantic experiences. The loneliness of the elderly lady in her later years diminishes significantly due to the girl’s companionship.

As autumn arrives, the girl finds a better place to live and prepares to leave, causing the elderly lady’s spirits to suddenly plummet.

From the films of the 1970s and 1980s in Europe and America, one could observe their capitalist lifestyle with multi-story buildings, lights, telephones, cars, luxurious houses, affluence, openness, decadence – a living standard at least 50 years ahead of China. People immersed in the superiority of socialism, after watching those darn capitalist countries, experienced a sudden shift in mood, becoming depressed, lost, and confused. Those who could initially travel abroad were mostly social elites and intellectuals, yet what they brought back were news that the foreign moon was indeed rounder. This was the historical background in which poets like Hai Zi and Gu Cheng rose to fame. Modern poetry liberated itself from the formal constraints of classical poetry, lowering the threshold for both creators and appreciators, focusing more on the expression of ideas, emotions, and images. Gu Cheng’s dark eyes represented national identity, perception, situational judgment, and unwavering beliefs, leaving a lasting impression. Therefore, Deng Xiaoping spoke about poverty not being socialism, allowing a portion of the population to become rich first, with the prosperous assisting the less affluent, aiming to liberate and develop productive forces.

Once upon a time in a distant tropical forest, there lived a group of monkeys. Bored one day, the leader of the troop proposed a game.

“Let’s play a game,” he said. “Whoever can make the other monkeys laugh the most will be declared the winner!”

The monkeys all agreed, and set off to try and make each other laugh.

The first monkey went up to the second one and started singing an off-key tune. The second monkey was not amused at all and scowled at the first one.

The third monkey tried his luck with a few silly voices, which made the fourth monkey chuckle. But the first and second monkeys still weren’t impressed.

The fifth monkey yanked out some of its fur and used it to make funny faces. All the monkeys laughed uproariously as the monkey made funnier and funnier faces.

The sixth monkey decided to go one step further and actually tried to do physical comedy like slipping on a banana peel and landing right on its backside. All the monkeys were rolling on the floor in hysterics.

The seventh monkey went even further and started telling jokes. This made the others laugh even more.

By the end of it, the leader of the troop declared that the seventh monkey had won the game, much to everyone’s amazement.

The monkeys learned from that day that laughter is indeed the best medicine. From then on, whenever they got bored, they would gather and each take turns making the others laugh.

Such is the story of the monkeys and their game of laughter.
